Jehanne the tertiary
Jehanne comes from a peasant family of a village in the
county of Artois. When her home was ravaged by a band of
routiers, she was placed in the care of the dominican
convent of Thieuloye, near Arras. Unwilling to be closeted
for her whole life and open to the preaching of Saint
Dominic, Jehanne decided, at age seventeen, to not take
monastic oaths and to remain a tertiary of the order. She
then travelled to Paris to help the poor and the beggars.
There she meets father Hugues and enters his service. She
follows him when he accompanies Boucicaut and Gallois de
Fougières on the Prussian crusade of 1391. |
